He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. Psalm 144:2
Anyone struggling with the impacts of Alzheimer’s disease understands how easily fear and anxiety can overtake the foggy days littering the landscape of your life. To temper the fear and anxiousness accompanying these particular foggy days, I slow my pace down, stay at home, walk outside around the homestead, talk with the Lord, and read from the Book of Psalms. There is something wonderful about the calming affect many of the psalms have on an anxious spirit. Perhaps this is why the Book of Psalms was written so we might enjoy comfort during difficult and trying times.
Today’s passage reminds us God is loving. Because of this spiritual truth, I know His promises prevail, He makes my path perfect, His word is true, and His strength is sufficient for all I face in life. In fact, King David declares that his loving God is his fortress, his stronghold, his deliverer, his shield, and his refuge. And boy do I need all of these incredible protective attributes of God since I am dealing with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease!
Alzheimer’s is by no means an easy foe to subdue; however, my God, my stronghold, my shield, and my fortress will protect me from all Alzheimer’s hurls my way. Will I be different because of the disease? Most likely I will since my outward actions will change as my memory continues to fade. However, my inward spirit belongs to the Lord and He will make sure it never changes! So what do I have to fear from this disease? Absolutely nothing! Why? Because my loving God is my shield, my fortress, my stronghold, and my refuge, and Alzheimer’s will have to yield to His awesome power.
Perhaps you are struggling in life today because of Alzheimer’s disease, some other form of dementia, or something entirely different but just as serious. If this is true then you too need a shield, fortress, stronghold, refuge, and deliverer. Turn to the Book of Psalms and read about the God of David. You will find comfort there, come to understand God’s promises are perfect, and learn how His Holy Spirit will help you during your difficult days. Remember, His word is flawless and life, in spite of our struggles, is much better with the help of a loving God!
