Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? Romans 8:35
I have been blessed with a loving and faithful wife who truly adores me. She has been this way since we seriously started our courtship more than forty years ago. We have been through some trying times but nothing has been quite as difficult as my diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease over eight years ago. Thankfully, my wife has stood faithfully by my side while continuing to love, support, and adore me.
Of course, not only does my wife continue to love me, but so does my Lord. Now I know that goes without saying. In fact, today’s passage reminds us that nothing shall separate us from the love of Christ. The Apostle Paul does this by poses a question to the saints in Rome. Why does he do this? Because he wants them to know that nothing will ever separate them from the love of the Lord; not even trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword. It is quite a list, isn’t it?
I am reminded of a wonderful passage from the Psalms, “For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord (Psalm 117:2).” It is truly hard to fathom how great God’s love is toward us and how His faithfulness endures forever. Perhaps forever is a concept many people have trouble accepting in today’s society since so many things don’t last forever. Cars breakdown, marriages end, children leave the nest, homes are lost, jobs are terminated, and finances run out. However, God’s great and gracious love never ends. It is forever! It transcends time, space, and even our bouts of sinfulness.
Paul continues in his letter to his Roman brothers and sister, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).” So great is God’s love for us that nothing can separate us from His love!
No matter how difficult your day may be, no matter how difficult your circumstances are, and no matter how difficult your struggles are, God still loves you, His faithfulness endures forever, and nothing can separate you from His love! I don’t know about you, but every time I read these words it brings exceedingly great joy to my heart. Why? Because not even early-onset Alzheimer’s disease can separate me from God’s great and gracious love. His love to toward me is forever and for that I am forever thankful!
