I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift my voice to the Lord for mercy. I pour out my complaint before him; before him I tell my trouble. When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who know my way. Psalm 142:1-3a
A GPS device is a truly magnificent invention. When you become disoriented or lost while driving, all you need do is look at the screen and it will help direct your path. During the first few years of my struggles with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, I was still driving but would become disoriented at times while traveling somewhere and alarmingly this occurred even in familiar places. Whenever this happened and I did not have a destination programmed into my GPS, all I had to do was pull over to the side of the road, type in the location of where I wanted to go, and then hit GO on the GPS. The device would guide me to my destination without a hitch. It was truly a remarkable device for someone in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease!
But what happens when you become disoriented, discouraged, or deceived in life? Today’s passage from the Psalms provides David’s insight into this very question. David declares that when his spirit grows faint, it is the Lord who knows the way! So David would cry aloud to the Lord about his trouble and lift his voice to the Lord for mercy. And what would the Lord do? He would provide His glorious guidance giving David the direction he needed.
This is exactly what we are to do when we grow faint in spirit, when we are discouraged, when we are disoriented in life, or even when we have been deceived along our path. We are to lift our voice and cry aloud our troubles to the Lord. Why? Because He knows the way! All we need do is ask.
I have been in this precarious boat so many times in my life. Now that I live with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, I find myself in this same boat more often than naught. So what do I do? I lift my voice to the Lord because He knows the best way through the Alzheimer’s valley. Without His guidance, I could easily be misled and end up traveling the wrong path which would be disastrous! Therefore, I rely on my Lord, His wisdom, and His Word to be my guide.
If you are growing faint in spirit because of dementia, discouragement, or some other dilemma in life, do as David did. Cry aloud and lift your voice to the Lord. Tell him about your troubles and ask Him to guide you along the best path for your specific situation. He already knows the way, all you need do is ask for His guidance. So lift your voice and cry aloud to the Lord today!
